CO-FOUNDER / PRESIDENT EMERITUS, A ROCHA

Panel: Creation Care, ESG and the Role of the Church

Peter and Miranda Harris founded A Rocha in 1983. In October 2019, Peter and Miranda, along with their colleagues Chris and Susanna Naylor, were in a horrific road accident while on a work trip in South Africa. Only Peter and the driver survived. He has spoken about life since in this short film: https://vimeo.com/433621210. At the end of May 2020, Peter retired and continues to serve A Rocha in a voluntary capacity.

After working as an English teacher at Christ’s Hospital, and then as an Anglican clergyman near Liverpool, UK, Peter and his wife Miranda moved to Portugal in 1983 to establish and run A Rocha’s first field study centre and bird observatory. In 1995 the work was given over to national leadership and they moved to France where together with national colleagues they oversaw the establishment of two other centres while travelling to resource the growing movement of Christians active in nature conservation. Peter and Miranda returned to the UK in 2010. The A Rocha story is told in Peter’s first two books: Under the Bright Wings (Regent College Publishing, 2000), and Kingfisher’s Fire (Monarch, 2008).

His 2017 book with Rod Wilson, Keeping Faith in Fundraising (Eerdmans, 2017) raises questions about the nature of philanthropy and fundraising in contemporary culture. Peter writes: “I often meet with entrepreneurs, investors and conservation leaders, trying to develop ways to create jobs and wealth and improve the environment instead of over-exploiting it. In poverty relief, business models are beginning to take some of the strain off philanthropy, but as conservationists we are only just beginning to exploit exciting new opportunities. I think I’ve got the best job in the world because I get to meet so many remarkable people. It is also a privilege to talk frequently about our Christian approach to conservation with many across a wide range of backgrounds. I couldn’t do my job without Christian hope. Despite all the environmental devastation which I’ve witnessed, I believe that God loves his world, and that will inspire great things short term and renew everything in the end.”

There is a great underrepresentation of Christians in the dynamic landscape of public policy and advocacy, and Christians are called to rise up and play a pivotal role in shaping a more just and inclusive society. We have a unique opportunity and responsibility to bring biblical values into the realm of policymaking, working towards a sustainable society that reflects principles of equity, diversity and inclusion.
Come and hear the stories of YB Michelle Ng, YB Dr. Kelvin Yii and Jason Wee (Co-Founder of Architects of Diversity) about their journey into the space of public advocacy. Be ready to shift your mindsets, discern your strengths and interests and discover the various advocacy roles in organisations that play a crucial part in the advocacy process.

Peter founded A Rocha in 1983 with his wife, Miranda Harris.

Most of the content was first time listening to it. Very enlightening. Hearing from God-fearing people who have impacted and inspired many was very encouraging. Time to discover the leader in me!

- Hillary L, Attendee, Malaysia

As a first-time Summit attendee, I think one of the most impactful takeaway was realizing that I AM a leader, period. That I CAN and SHOULD start cultivating authentic and effective leadership qualities from this moment onward, because there's simply no such thing as learning how to be a leader only when I obtain a 'leader' title. Secondly and importantly, most leadership "trainings" often focus on generic principles and practical ways to lead one's team, based on a corporate/ career-based setting. But this Summit has opened up my eyes to see leadership in every aspect of my life (family, ministry, even one's PERSONAL leadership), and apply leadership qualities in a flexible, multifaceted way.

- Rachel G, attendee, Malaysia

Many pastoral leaders and many business leaders came to participate. Everyone felt that they had gained a lot. The pastoral care of their church and the management of the entire enterprise brought many new ideas.

- Xia Zhongjian, Taiwan Gospel Advancement Association, Malaysia

Learning never stops, and I have been so thankful to be able to allocate 2 days to join in Global Leadership Summit in KL.
Nuggets of wisdom pouring out of very experienced and distinguished leaders like Roshan Thiran, Datuk Seri Idris Jala on transformational leadership in 6 steps, Henry Kaestner, Daniel Pink with the 4 categories of regrets and the actions to remedy it, and Sahar Hashemi OBE on knowing 100% of you in being an entrepreneur. So blessed with so much more learning.

- Jasmine N.

2 Days Of Immense Learning through The Global Leadership Summit by GLN Malaysia. Investing in my personal growth is of the best Leadership decision I can make. Everyone has the ability to influence. GLN is a community of curious, growth minded, change driven people committed to developing their leadership skills to maximize their influence for the purpose of igniting positive transformation wherever they live and work.

Everyday, I count my blessings. As I continue my journey to contribute to those around me, I'm grateful for the failures I've endured, the people I meet everyday, opportunities missed and gained, a healthy body and mind.
